Overview of Liberty Mutual Car Insurance
The company’s logo is an image of the Statue of Liberty, but Liberty Mutual is better known for its “Only Human” advertising campaign that shows people making mistakes that result in car accidents. More recently, Lady Liberty serves as the backdrop to ads praising coverage options like accident forgiveness and new car replacement. The ads have helped Liberty Mutual become the seventh largest auto insurance company in the country, with a market share of nearly five percent.

Pros and Cons of Liberty Mutual Car Insurance
- The telematics discount program only requires that the monitoring device be installed in your car for 90 days, one of the shortest timeframes in the industry.
- Liberty Mutual will consider writing policies for drivers who need an SR-22 (a certificate of insurance for high-risk drivers).
- The auto policy is written for a 12-month period rather than having a six-month renewal, reducing the frequency of potential rate increases.

- Rates can be fairly high if you don’t fit into the company’s target demographic of a multicar homeowner household.
- The company has a high customer complaint score of 4.59, compared to the median score of 1.
Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Coverage
Liberty Mutual’s auto insurance is aimed at the lower-risk, stable driver. Higher-risk drivers might find a better fit at the company’s subsidiary, Safeco. If you aren’t eligible for one of Liberty Mutual’s affinity discounts, the rates can be high, but they do offer extras, some of which are included at no additional cost.
The standard coverage options at Liberty Mutual allow you to choose from a fairly wide range of limits, which means that you can customize your policy to fit both your budget and your needs.
Liberty Mutual offers a range of BI coverage limits, from the state minimums on up to $250,000/$500,000. For coverage higher than this, you have to purchase their umbrella policy, with limits beginning at $1 million.
The online quote tool will recommend a level for the property damage liability coverage, but you can adjust it to suit your needs, from the state minimum on up.
New car replacement is usually optional, but Liberty Mutual includes it as standard coverage for brand new vehicles that are totaled, as long as the car is less than one year old and has less than 15,000 miles on it.
Liberty Mutual’s med pay coverage is fairly broad. In addition to covering costs from an accident in your car, it covers medical costs incurred by family members who are in an accident in another car or injured as a pedestrian.
The online quote system will assess the age of your car and default to no comprehensive coverage if it determines the coverage is not recommended. But you can always add it if you want, and you can select a deductible from $0 to $2,500.
You have to have comprehensive in order to purchase collision coverage, which is available from a $50 deductible up to $2,500.
If there is a manufacturer recall related to your car, Liberty Mutual will notify you.
Another feature that is usually included in the optional coverages, Liberty Mutual will apply accident forgiveness to your policy automatically and at no cost when you have a history of five years of driving with no incidents.
Liberty Mutual has a good selection of coverage available. Some you would expect from any reputable auto insurer, but others are unique, such as special features for teachers or the deductible fund coverage.
With this option, if your car is totaled, Liberty Mutual will pay for replacement with a vehicle that is one year newer and has 15,000 fewer miles than your original car.
This coverage comes in options of $30, $45, $60 or $90 per day, up to 30 days. But you must have comprehensive coverage in order to purchase it.
The online quoting tool gives you the option of a $50 coverage limit for towing and roadside assistance.
If this option is included on your policy, it lowers your collision deductible each time you renew your policy.
If you’re a teacher, you’re eligible for the educator endorsement at no extra cost. It provides extra protection and coverage for your vehicle when parked at school, or for you and your property when you are driving for work.
