Overview of Allstate Car Insurance
Allstate was founded in 1931 by the president of the Sears, Roebuck and Co. as an auto insurance company that sold policies by mail. The original “Good Hands” logo in 1950 showed the hands holding an automobile, and in the decades since, the company has become a leader in the nation’s auto insurance market, holding nearly 10 percent of the market share in 2013, according to A.M. Best. Actor Dennis Haysbert began serving as the face of the company’s advertising in 2003, and by 2015 a survey by market research company Q&A found him to be the insurance “mascot” with the most influence on consumer purchases.

Pros and Cons of Allstate Car Insurance
- Allstate is an industry leader in automobile safety and education.
- Since Allstate is a carrier that offers auto, home and life insurance, you can bundle all of your insurance policies together with one company.
- The online quoting system allows you to keep your current coverage levels, choose from a range of price-determined packages or tailor a policy by adjusting each coverage individually.
- Allstate offers sound system coverage to protect your car’s high-end audio equipment, a coverage that’s not offered by all car insurance carriers.
- In the 2015 J.D. Power survey of customers’ overall purchase experience of auto insurance, Allstate was rated as below average. In claims satisfaction, Allstate rated about average.
- Allstate writes six-month auto insurance policies, which exposes the policyholders to twice as many opportunities for rate increases as with companies that offer 12-month policies.
- Although Allstate offers a “Student-Away-at-School” discount, it doesn’t show up on the online quoting system, meaning you’ll have to speak with an agent to see how this discount will affect your rates.
- The quoting system requires you to assign a primary (and secondary, if appropriate) driver for each car, which some users find cumbersome.
Allstate Car Insurance Coverage
Allstate may be just shy of having a century of experience in the auto insurance business, but the company keeps up-to-date with all of the modern innovations in coverages and optional features, such as an online, interactive guide to car insurance it calls “Bumper-to-Bumper Basics.” It also has a wide range of standard and optional coverage options.
Allstate has a history of presenting information as simply as possible, and the internet is well-suited to this philosophy. The company uses both static and interactive graphics on its website to describe exactly how well the standard coverages will protect you and your vehicle in a variety of auto accident situations. Here are the standard coverage options you can expect with Allstate:
The bodily injury coverage provides limits for the per-person and per-incident amounts covered in an accident, from state minimums on up to $250,000/$500,000. The property damage coverage can be set as high as $2,000,000 per accident.
You can set your collision coverage, which covers damage to your car if you collide with something, to cover out-of-pocket costs for repairs from $50 to $2,000.
For damages to your car caused by other-than-collision events, you can get coverage with no deductible, or you can have the deductible range from $50 to $2,000.
While this coverage — which protects you if you get in an accident with a motorist with little or no insurance — isn’t required, most insurance agents recommend you carry it at the same level of protection that you have in bodily liability coverage, and Allstate follows this guideline.
Another coverage that isn’t mandatory, this “no-fault” protection helps with medical costs if anyone is injured in your vehicle. It’s offered in a range from $1,000 to $100,000.
Allstate also refers to this as a PUP — a Personal Umbrella Policy. In order to have an umbrella policy with the company, you must also have either an Allstate home insurance policy with a liability level of $300,000 or an Allstate auto insurance policy with a bodily injury liability level of $250,000/$500,000.
Glass breakage is included under Allstate’s collision coverage, but it does have a separate claims process for glass incidents called Glass Claim Express. This coverage expedites your repairs through a partnership with the company Safelite.
In addition to the common optional coverage offerings of roadside assistance/towing and labor and rental car reimbursement, Allstate also offers additional coverage for your sound system and a set of options to help protect new-car owners.
This coverage is very limited, with no range of choices—you either accept the option that will cover the first $100 of an incident in which you need assistance or towing, or you don’t add the coverage to your policy. Allstate also offers two other plans for roadside assistance—a membership motor club and a pay-per-use service program.
This option will pay for a rental car if your vehicle is in the shop due to a covered claim. Depending on the type of rental car you want, your plan will reimburse you up to $30, $40, $50 or $100 per day.
To purchase this extra coverage for a sound system permanently installed in your car, you must first have comprehensive coverage. The sound system protection ranges from $250 to $2,500.
If you have a brand-new car and it’s totaled, this coverage can help to replace it with the same make and model.
If your new car is damaged but isn’t a total loss, this optional coverage helps pay for repairs based on the replacement cost without factoring in depreciation.
This stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection, and will help to cover the difference between the amount that may be owed on a car and the actual cash value of the car if it’s totaled. This optional coverage is used to help protect a policyholder from still having to make payments on a newer car if it’s in an accident and is a total loss.
