How to Compare Motorcycle Insurance Quotes Online

Shopping for motorcycle insurance doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some key steps you can take to compare quotes effectively, save money in the long run and find the best policy for your needs.

Loading...
1

Gather the information you need.

Collecting all pertinent information is an essential part of getting an accurate quote. There are several pieces of information you'll need, including:

  • Your motorcycle's VIN (or the make, model and year)
  • Average annual mileage
  • How long you've held an active motorcycle license
  • The dates of any safe riding courses you've taken
  • Your motorcycle insurance information, if you are currently insured
  • Any other information that may earn you a discount (GPA for a good student discount, motorcycle group affiliations, etc.)
2

Determine your desired level of coverage.

Once you have all of your information in one spot, the next step is determining just how much motorcycle coverage you need. Comparing plans with the same policy limits is crucial if you want to find the company that offers the cheapest, best insurance plan.

Your first step is to consider the amount of liability coverage you need. Like liability car insurance, this covers damages to the other driver and their vehicle. While a motorcycle isn’t likely to cause as much damage as a car or a truck, you can still end up liable for a significant amount of money in the event of an accident. If you are at fault and cause both property damage and bodily injuries in a worst-case scenario, you could be on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Consider how much you could potentially lose in a court case — your home and your vehicles could be taken, or you could have future earnings docked until your debt is paid.

Next, determine what you need for your own property and bodily injury coverage. This coverage could include comprehensive, collision, gap coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), MedPay or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. You'll need to make sure you have enough coverage in place to safeguard your finances and assets in the event of an accident.

Once you know exactly how much coverage you need, you can begin comparing quotes. Be sure to compare motorcycle insurance quotes for the same amount of coverage to avoid accidentally choosing a policy that doesn’t offer the protection you want.

What Coverage Options Should You Consider for Your Quote?

There are multiple types of coverage you may consider when getting a quote, including:

  • Liability: This covers damages you cause in an at-fault accident, including property damage and bodily injury.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This coverage pays for your medical bills and other associated costs, regardless of who is at fault. PIP insurance is required by law in some states but not available in others.
  • Medical Payments: Like PIP, this coverage is also designed to pay for medical costs if you’re involved in an accident, whether or not you are at fault.
  • Comprehensive and Collision: Comprehensive insurance covers vandalism, theft, weather events, broken glass and animal-related accidents. Collision insurance provides coverage if you hit another vehicle or fixed object. These are often paired together and referred to as full coverage insurance.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM or UIM): This coverage pays for property damage and bodily injuries if you're hit by someone who is uninsured or doesn’t have enough insurance to pay for all your accident-related expenses.
  • Gap Insurance: Gap insurance coverage will pay for the “gap” between your motorcycle’s value and the amount you owe on a loan or lease if your bike is totaled in an accident. This coverage may not be available in every state.
  • Roadside Assistance: This coverage helps if your motorcycle breaks down, you need a tow truck or you run out of gas. However, note that roadside assistance won't bring you a spare in the event of a flat — in this situation, your bike will have to be towed.

MoneyGeek strongly recommends that shoppers consider a full-coverage policy with at least $50,000/$100,000 bodily injury liability coverage and $25,000 personal property coverage.

For a small extra cost, we believe it's worth increasing coverage to 100/300/100 for added protection. This means that you would be covered up to $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident for bodily injury liability coverage and up to $100,000 in property damage liability.

MoneyGeek also recommends choosing UM coverage that matches your policy liability coverage and at least the state minimum for PIP coverage, if required by your state.

Other Motorcycle Coverage to Consider
  • Optional/Added Equipment Coverage: This coverage typically offers protection for aftermarket upgrades, such as custom seats, crash bars and fairings. It may be included in your policy or sold as a separate add-on benefit.
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Parts: If you have OEM parts in your bike, this coverage guarantees your insurance provider will cover the use of OEM parts in repairs.
  • Contents/Personal Belongings Coverage: This coverage pays for damages to items you're carrying with you on your bike if they're stolen, lost or damaged, such as your cell phone or your helmet.

Get motorcycle insurance quotes from multiple companies.

Motorcycle insurance quotes can vary significantly from company to company. Because of this, you can save 50% or more on your motorcycle insurance policy by comparison shopping between multiple providers. We recommend collecting quotes from at least three companies to find the best rate for your unique situation.

The chart below shows examples of motorcycle quotes for the same coverage and location from multiple companies. Remember that your location and driving record play a large part in your rates, so your rates may not match what is listed here. Where Can You Get a Motorcycle Insurance Quote Online?
  • GEICO: GEICO has higher rates than some policies but lower rates than others. It is a well-known company with multiple discounts and coverage options, including unique ones like their mature rider and multi-cycle discounts. GEICO only sells its product online, not through agents.
  • Dairyland: Dairyland has excellent rates and customer service. They also have many motorcycle insurance coverage options and discounts, including discounted rates for mopeds and scooters. Unfortunately, Dairyland motorcycle insurance is only available in 42 states.
  • Nationwide: Nationwide offers a benefit for motorcycle riders who use repair shops within their pre-approved network. Using their network of repair shops means all repairs come with a written guarantee for as long as you own your motorcycle. Nationwide has year-round coverage available and multiple motorcycle insurance discounts for its customers.
  • Progressive: Progressive typically provides excellent rates and a wide variety of coverage options. They also have multiple discounts available, including a bundling discount, a motorcycle safety course discount and a discount for paying your policy in full. The company also has a detailed roadside assistance plan available to its customers, as well as extra accessory coverage designed to cover damage to parts of your motorcycle that aren't part of the stock unit.
  • Harley-Davidson Insurance: Harley-Davidson offers multiple unique discounts, including for people riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and riders who take their H-D Riding Academy new rider course. There is also a discount for homeowners who have proof of homeowners insurance. While they offer perks for riders who own a Harley, anyone who owns a motorcycle of any kind, even a scooter or a moped, can purchase insurance through the company.

Explore ways to save money on your motorcycle insurance policy.

Most motorcycle insurance companies offer discounts if you:

  • Take a riding safety course. Riders who take an approved safety course are often given a discount on their insurance costs.
  • Join a qualified motorcycle club. Harley-Davidson Insurance is famous for this, but many motorcycle insurance companies offer discounts for joining specific motorcycle clubs.
  • Bundle your insurance plans. If you have multiple insurance policies, such as motorcycle, home or auto insurance, carrying all of your coverage through one company can earn you a significant discount.
  • Ride safely. Avoiding accidents and traffic tickets can earn you a good rider discount.
  • Pay in full. Most insurance companies offer you multiple ways to pay your insurance bill, but if you choose to make one lump sum payment rather than quarterly or monthly payments, you could earn a discount.
