Pros and Cons of Travelers Car Insurance

Pros

  • The online quote tool automatically raises flags during the quoting process to alert you of special considerations about your car. It may suggest you consider GAP coverage, for example. Or it may suggest you could save money by declining comp and collision (for older vehicles).
  • Travelers offers optional coverage packages designed to optimize specific features such as new car replacement or roadside assistance.

Cons

  • The telematics savings program at Travelers is limited to only eight states and is based strictly on low mileage, rather than on good driving habits.
  • Online quoting is not available in all states.
  • Travelers has a NAIC customer complaint ratio of 2.16, which is higher than the median score of 1.

Travelers Car Insurance Coverage

Travelers is a large, stable company. You can tailor your car insurance policy to your exact specifications and look at what similar Travelers policyholders have purchased. The company offers optional coverage packages to make it easy to get the extras you want without having to research and choose each option individually.

The standard options are available in a wide range of coverage levels, without overwhelming you with too many choices. If you have any questions as to what is covered, the site includes a detailed description of each type of coverage.

Bodily injury liability

Travelers offers the state minimums on up to $500,000/$500,000. Policyholders who want higher liability coverage can click over to information on an umbrella policy from within the auto quote tool.

Property damage

This is offered in levels beginning at the state minimum up to $500,000. The system’s default setting will quote you at a level based on the information that you have entered online.

Uninsured motorist

If you attempt to include more uninsured motorist coverage than your bodily injury coverage, the tool will not immediately raise a red flag, but you will be notified of the error when you attempt to recalculate the premium total.

Medical payments

If you choose to purchase medical payments coverage, you can choose from five levels ranging from $1,000 to $25,000, though the coverage may vary depending on your state.

Comprehensive coverage

The system notes that this coverage might not make financial sense for older vehicles and provides a link to Kelley Blue Book so that you can decide for yourself. If chosen, deductible levels run from $0 to $2,500, though these levels may vary depending on your state.

Collision coverage

This coverage is not available without also purchasing comprehensive coverage. It is offered in seven deductible levels, ranging from $100 to $5,000.

Travelers offers a solid selection of optional coverage. They might not show up if you quote your policy based on the “People Like You” guide, so be sure to also check under the custom coverage quoting option.

Responsible Driver Plan

This is available in Basic or Premier levels and is intended to prevent your premium from increasing as a result of an accident or minor violation.

Rental (ETE) coverage

The rental reimbursement coverage is offered at four levels ($30, $40, $50 or $100 per day up to 30 days) and does not apply in the case of total theft of the vehicle.

Loan gap coverage

In the case of total loss of a new car, this will cover the difference between the actual cash value of the car and the amount still owed on a lease or financing, minus the deductible amount.

Glass deductible

You can choose to add this option to the policy to carry a lower deductible ($50) on glass-related claims than on your other comprehensive claims.

Roadside assistance coverage

Like the Responsible Driver Plan, Travelers offers roadside assistance in Basic and Premier plans, beginning with 15 miles of towing covered by the program.
