Cheapest Car Insurance in California (2026)

GEICO is the cheapest insurance company in California for both full coverage, averaging $95/month, and minimum coverage at $41/month, making it the most affordable option in 18 out of 20 California's most populous cities.  

State Farm is the cheapest option in California for teens ($88–131), young adults 20 to 25 years old ($70–85), and the most affordable for seniors 65+ years old, with rates averaging $70 monthly.  

For high-risk drivers with a speeding ticket or a DUI on their record, get quotes from GEICO first to get rates as low as $141 per month and $241 per month, respectively.

GEICO and Progressive both offer the cheapest full coverage in California at $95 a month. With $0 separating them, the question is which carrier handles your claim better when you need to file one. Progressive assigns a claims representative to work on your case. GEICO routes claims through a centralized call center.

A driver who has filed a claim in the last two years or commutes in heavy traffic should quote Progressive first. GEICO is the better fit for a driver who manages everything through the app and hasn't filed recently. Neither carrier offers a path below $95, so the next question is whether full coverage is worth it for your car.

GEICO offers the cheapest minimum-coverage policy in California, at $41 per month for the state-mandated minimum liability coverage of 30/60/15 - thats  $8 below Progressive's $49 ($96 a year) rate for the same coverage and discount shopping won't close that gap.

GEICO's military discount (up to 15%) brings that $41 down to roughly $35. Its federal employee discount (up to 12%) brings it to about $36. Progressive doesn't offer either.

Progressive's multi-car discount (averaging 4%) and continuous-insurance discount bring $49 down to roughly $47, still $6 above GEICO's base rate before any GEICO discounts are applied.

If you're not eligible for any discounts on either side, $41 at GEICO is the minimum coverage floor in California.

California's minimum property damage limit is $15,000. A rear-end collision involving a three-year-old sedan can exceed that in repair costs. The driver with minimum coverage is personally liable for any amount above $15,000.

State Farm is the cheapest for teens and young adults aged from 16 through 25, for both male and female drivers. State Farm's premiums drop at every birthday, but it won't lower it until you ask. Requote before each birthday or pay the old rate for another cycle. The steepest drop is between 18 and 19: females fall $24 a month ($288 a year), males fall $34 ($408 a year). By 25, rates reach $70 (female) and $102 (male).

While shopping for new quotes, ask your agent about the good student discount (B average or better, typically 10% to 25% off) and the Steer Clear safe driving program for drivers under 25. On a $191 rate, a 15% good student discount saves roughly $29 a month or $348 a year. State Farm doesn't always offer these at enrollment.

GEICO is cheaper before 65, but at 65, State Farm provides the cheapest car insurance for seniors in California at $70 a month, $27 less than GEICO's senior rate of $97. A driver currently with GEICO who doesn't shop around with other auto insurers and stays with GEICO at 65 pays a higher premium until they switch carriers. 

If you're on GEICO with the military discount (up to 15%) or federal employee discount (up to 12%), those discounts bring GEICO's $97 down to roughly $82 (military) or $85 (federal). Neither alone beats State Farm's $70. Both stacked bring GEICO to about $73, close but still above State Farm. 

Get a State Farm quote at least 30 days before your 65th birthday renewal.

GEICO is the cheapest in 18 of 20 California cities. AAA is the most affordable in Fremont at $39/month and in Stockton at $40/month. Get quotes from GEICO first, no matter what California city you live in. In Fremont or Stockton, also quote GEICO, where it and AAA are within a few dollars of each other. AAA gives you a local agent to call when you file a claim. Whether that's worth $1 to $3 more a month depends on how you want to handle claims.

If you moved within California and didn't update your garaging address, you're paying the old city's rate. The rate is filed to where the car is parked overnight, not where you get your mail. A driver who moves from Los Angeles to Chula Vista and keeps the old address pays $24 a month ($288 a year) more than necessary at the same carrier.

GEICO is the cheapest auto insurer for high-risk drivers caught speeding or driving under the influence - $141 after a speeding ticket and $224 after a DUI. Progressive is the cheapest after an at-fault accident ($158) and after a texting violation ($158).

After an at-fault accident, Progressive at $158 underprices GEICO and offers accident forgiveness. Accident forgiveness means that if you cause a second accident during the policy term, Progressive won't raise your rate for it. For a driver who just had one at-fault accident and commutes on the 405 or the 101 every day, that protection is worth more than the rate difference alone. GEICO does not offer accident forgiveness in California.
