Overview of The Hartford Car Insurance

The Hartford has been in business for more than two centuries. In that time, it has garnered a reputation as a solid, conservative insurance company. In recent years it has racked up an impressive array of honors and awards in areas like ethics, climate leadership and workplace diversity. In keeping with its mature nature, the Hartford partners with the AARP for home and auto insurance, and more than three-quarters of its property and casualty insurance business comes from this partnership. It is the eleventh largest auto insurer in the US, with a market share of almost 1.3 percent.

Pros and Cons of The Hartford Car Insurance

Pros

Cons

  • If you have more than four vehicles or more than five drivers on your policy, the online quote tool will not be able to complete your quote.
  • The online quote tool can be very sensitive and if you need to change data it may freeze up and make you call to speak with an agent.
  • The Hartford is so intertwined with AARP it is sometimes hard to tell if policy features are for the general public or if you have to be a member of the organization to qualify.
  • With an NAIC customer complaint ratio of 2.82, The Hartford comes in quite a bit higher than the median score of 1, meaning it has more than the median customer complaints.

The Hartford Car Insurance Coverage

With a target demographic of mature policyholders, The Hartford’s clients usually have at least some experience with auto insurance. The website is informative, but also works on the assumption that you are experienced enough to choose your own coverage levels from a large selection of options. Some special policy features require membership in AARP, so be sure to check with an agent to find out if you are eligible.

The standard coverage options are presented with default amounts based on the data that you enter. You can choose a basic coverage or standard coverage package, or easily customize the policy elements to suit your needs.

Bodily injury liability

This starts at the state minimums, but then offers a wide selection of choices, all the way up to $500,000/$1,000,000.

Property damage liability

Policyholders at the Hartford can also choose from several levels of coverage for property damage liability, up to $250,000.

Medical payments

If purchased, you can select coverage for $1,000, $5,000, or $10,000, or in increments of $25,000 up to a cap or $100,000.

Uninsured motorist bodily injury

The online quoting tool will only show you the levels of coverage available based upon the level of bodily injury coverage you have chosen.

Comprehensive

The wide range of deductibles offered for the comprehensive coverage allows you to pick exactly what you want, including options for a $0 deductible or no comp coverage at all.

Collision

The collision coverage deductible is available in eight different levels, from $50 up to $1000, if you choose to purchase it.

The Hartford doesn’t get fancy with a lot of optional coverage. Instead, they offer the normal extras that one would expect from any well-established auto insurance company.

Full glass

This extra coverage for your windshield and windows means that the insurance will pay the full cost of a covered glass loss with no deductible required. Availability varies from state to state.

Transportation expense

Both comp and collision coverage is required to purchase this rental reimbursement coverage. The Hartford allows you to choose your own daily limit from among a range of options.

Towing insurance

With the towing coverage, you are covered up to the limits you select, and will need to pay out of pocket for parts, or labor costs that exceed your policy limits. You have to have comprehensive coverage to get the towing coverage.

No-fault insurance coverage

Not available in some states, mandatory in others, this is also known as personal injury protection insurance. It covers medical expenses, work loss, funeral expenses and more following an accident, no matter who caused it.

New car replacement

If your insured vehicle is brand new and gets totaled within the first 15 months or 15,000 miles, The Hartford will replace it without factoring in depreciation.

Advantage PLUS

Available in some states, The Hartford’s Advantage PLUS package adds additional features to your policy, such as first accident forgiveness, disappearing deductible, one deductible, waiver of deductible and $100 deductible.
