Figo Pet Insurance Review

Figo Pet Insurance Ratings: How Does It Stack Up?

Figo earns a high rating in our pet insurance study, ranking fifth for cats (4.23 out of 5) and seventh for dogs (4.42 out of 5) out of 18 major providers we analyzed. It's worth considering if you're focused primarily on price, but you'll need to explore alternatives if your main priority is coverage and service quality.

To give you a better idea of Figo's performance at a high level, I've summarized its strengths and weaknesses across coverage, affordability and customer experience.

  • Coverage (9th for dogs and cats): Figo's pet insurance is serviceable for most pet owners, but aside from covering rehabilitation and alternative therapy in its base plan, it doesn't have as much noteworthy features compared to other insurers. It has shorter waiting periods for accidents and orthopedic conditions than some, but its policy customization options are limited, particularly for annual limits.

  • Affordability (5th for dogs and cats): Earning a spot in the top five, Figo provides savings of 11% against the national average. The company is cheapest for select breeds such as Central Asian Shepherd Dogs and Australian Mists, as well as pet owners in  in lower-population states. However, its pet insurance will be more expensive for larger dog breeds and larger states.

  • Customer experience (13th for dogs and cats): Figo falls behind in customer experience, landing in 13th place out of 18 nationally. Although it distinguishes itself for having one of the easiest claim submission process, it delivers the worst performance in claims appeals and price transparency.

These ranks are for our base profiles of a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and 7-year-old Ragdoll, each with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate, which may not reflect your specific situation.

Who Is Figo Pet Insurance Good and Not Ideal for?

Based on my analysis, Figo is mostly good for pet owners with specific breeds, as well as those who want fast accident coverage or don't need high annual limits. However, it may not be the right fit for owners who want the most comprehensive coverage or the smoothest customer experience, from buying to submitting claims.

Who Figo Is Good for:

  • Owners of Australian Mists or Central Asian Shepherd Dogs looking to save: Figo is the cheapest pet insurance provider for these two breeds, providing savings between 41% and 52% against the national breed averages.
  • Pet parents looking for next-day accident coverage: Figo imposes a 1-day waiting period for injuries caused by an accident, which can be waived if you live in Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Nebraska, Washington, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maine, Vermont, Maryland and Hawaii.
  • Mixed-breed pet owners who don't need high annual limits: Figo only offers $5,000, $10,000 and unlimited annual limits, which works if you have a young, healthy mixed-breed pet and don't want the high cost associated with unlimited coverage. Also, choosing a lower limit unlocks the company's 100% reimbursement option, removing co-insurance entirely after you meet your annual deductible.

Who Figo Is Not Ideal for:

  • First-time buyers looking for guided support: Figo lacks personalized guidance during the buying process, with notable gaps in quality around price transparency and sales support.
  • Owners of breeds with a higher risk to parasite-related conditions: Figo doesn't cover treatments for parasites, such as heartworms, fleas, ticks, roundworms and tapeworms, unless there's no preventive medication for them, which isn't ideal for high-risk breeds like Border Collies, Bulldogs, Terriers and Persians.
  • Pet owners who want a realistic path to appealing a denied claim: Claim appeals is one of Figo's weakest areas within customer experience, with the provider rarely reversing a decision, especially if it involves pre-existing condition determinations.

  • Figo: 4.37
  • Lemonade: 4.51
Lemonade outperforms Figo across affordability, customer experience and coverage. Whether you’re looking for lower rates, better customer support or more flexible coverage options and terms, Lemonade is the stronger choice than Figo.
  • Figo: 4.37
  • Nationwide: 3.73
Figo’s average monthly rate is $29 cheaper than Nationwide’s, plus it offers broader coverage options and terms, including 100% reimbursement. However, pet owners looking for a smoother buying and policy management experience are better served by Nationwide.
  • Figo: 4.37
  • MetLife: 4.29
MetLife leads ahead of Figo in customer experience by eight spots, excelling across all three stages of the policyholder experience. Figo edges it out in affordability and coverage, though MetLife has no waiting period for accidents, while Figo’s coverage kicks in after a day.
  • Figo: 4.37
  • Spot: 4.32
Ranking third for customer experience, Spot is more ideal than Figo for pet owners who value a frictionless experience when buying, managing their policy and submitting claims. Figo is preferable for those looking for cost savings and faster accident coverage.
  • Figo: 4.37
  • Embrace: 3.96
Figo is a lot cheaper than Embrace and can provide financial protection up to 100% reimbursement depending on the deductible and annual limit you select. Meanwhile, Embrace has fewer service quality gaps in claims and policy management.

Figo Pet Insurance Coverage Review

Figo's pet insurance coverage comes in ninth place overall, with a base plan that covers hereditary conditions, emergency services, veterinary specialist treatments, rehabilitation and mobility devices, and alternative therapy in addition to new accidents and illnesses. However, it won't cover most parasites, which should be considered by owners of breeds with higher parasite exposure risk, such as Border Collies, Bulldogs and Persians, as well as pet owners living in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and the Gulf Coast region where heartworm, tick-borne illness and flea-related conditions are more prevalent year-round.

The company also excludes natural supplements, vitamins and all foods, whether prescribed or not, which isn't ideal for pets prone to chronic conditions like kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders or food allergies, since prescribed diets are often a primary treatment for them.

Figo stands out for being the only pet insurance provider in our analysis to offer 100% reimbursement, though this option is limited to $500 to $750 deductibles and $5,000 to $10,000 annual limits, so mixed-breed pets with low risk for costly hereditary conditions will likely benefit more than purebred animals that may need more coverage within a policy year.

As for waiting periods, Figo imposes a 1-day wait for accidents, beneficial for high-energy breeds like Border Collies, Jack Russell Terriers and Siberian Huskies. It also has a 14-day waiting period for illnesses and six months for orthopedic conditions, which is longer than the 14-day timeframe that providers like Pumpkin and ASPCA require, and can create a coverage gap for breeds predisposed to joint and ligament conditions, such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers.

The table below further breaks down Figo's coverage offerings:

WAITING PERIODS CAN VARY WHERE YOU LIVE

Where you live can affect the waiting periods imposed by your pet insurance provider. States like California, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington prohibit waiting periods for accidents and limit orthopedic waiting periods to 30 days or less. As such, checking whether your state has specific pet insurance regulations before enrolling with any provider is always worth doing.

Figo Pet Insurance Coverage Add-On Review

Figo offers two optional add-ons for extending its base plan to cover routine care and vet exam fees. Its wellness add-on provides coverage for preventative services like routine exams and vaccines at fixed amounts per year. Meanwhile, its vet exam fee add-on covers the cost of the exam itself during vet visits, and without it, you stand to pay the per-visit charge out of pocket every time.

Although its ranking is high for cats, its average savings compared to national cat insurance costs is only 1%. Its pricing advantage is more substantial for dogs, where it averages 11% below national dog insurance cost benchmarks.

Figo Pet Insurance Customer Experience Review and Ratings

Ranking 13th out of 18 for both pets, Figo lands in the bottom tier for customer experience in our study. Price transparency during the buying process and claim appeals are the provider's least competitive areas, whereas claim submission ease is its best-performing sub-category. For most pet owners, submitting claims with Figo is a fast and straightforward process, but those who run into a disputed claim or need to challenge a coverage decision should go in with realistic expectations about the process.

Based on my team and I's testing, Figo's service quality changes depending on the situation:

High-Level Customer Experience Performance

Best situation: Submitting a claim after a sudden illness or emergency surgery

laptop icon

Moderate situation: Managing routine policy tasks through the app, like checking claim status after a vet visit or updating payment details when financial situation has changed

uninsured icon

Worst situation: Appealing a denied claim, particularly if it involves a pre-existing condition determination

My team and I assessed every stage of the policyholder experience separately. Figo does its best in policy management and loses ground in buying and claims, though they all fall in the middle-to-bottom tier of our analysis.

Figo Pet Insurance Buying Experience Review

Figo finishes in 15th place for buying experience, where its performance in price transparency pushes its overall rank down to the bottom tier. In our testing, the process of getting a quote and enrolling is fairly easy, allowing you to choose from its set plans or customize your own coverage, but there can be times when the quoted price won't match what you're ultimately charged for a policy.

  • Onboarding (8th out of 18): Figo's enrollment process is straightforward, with little to no issues occurring during account setup. You also have immediate access to your policy information, where coverage terms are clearly disclosed, so the onboarding experience overall is smooth and relatively transparent.
  • Price Transparency (18th out of 18): Getting a quote with Figo takes less than five minutes, with pricing variables visible and rate changes reflected in real time as you build your custom plan. However, our evaluation found that there are instances when Figo will request vet records and identify risk factors that weren't priced into your original quote, which can result in premium adjustments that arrive without much advance notice.
  • Sales Support (16th out of 18): The buying experience with Figo is online-first and self-directed, built around pet owners being able to complete their purchase without needing guidance from a customer representative. This works for buyers who come in knowing what they want, but those who may need support before committing may not find Figo as proactive in providing it.

Figo Pet Insurance Policy Management Experience Review

Although policy management is Figo's strongest area overall, its performance still belongs in the middle of the pack, showing that the company is easy to work with but not the most competitive in this category. My team and I found that its policy management tool holds up well for routine tasks, but the experience becomes less consistent when issues grow more complex.

  • Account Servicing (10th out of 18): Routine tasks like accessing policy documents, reviewing coverage, monitoring claim activity and updating your account information is manageable through Figo's online portal and app. However, we found that when issues move beyond routine account management, such as clarifications about medical history or questions about coverage and policy exceptions, it can be difficult to get definitive answers.
  • Admin Support (11th out of 18): When needed, Figo's representatives are responsive and professional, resolving issues without the need for major escalation most of the time. The gap appears around consistency, with different agents providing varying answers to the same policy question, which creates uncertainty regarding policy interpretation.
  • App UX (9th out of 18): Figo provides a mobile app and an online portal for policy management, both of which are user-friendly and easy to navigate. They also have a clean, modern interface that makes for a smooth and intuitive digital experience. There may be the occasional technical glitches that result in login issues or loading delays, but these are sporadic rather than systemic.
  • Billing and Renewals (13th out of 18): What we found during our testing is that most of the issues revolve around needing support intervention for changing payment methods and modifying coverage terms during renewals. Figo's billing process is largely seamless, but questions about charges and billing changes can still happen here and there.

Figo Pet Insurance Claims Experience Review

Figo's claims experience is a mixed bag, ranking 13th out of 18 providers nationally. Where the process of submitting claims and receiving reimbursement is fast and straightforward, the decisions themselves are where most frustrations can occur, with claims fairness and appeals being the company's weakest areas.

  • Submission Ease (3rd out of 18): Whether you're using Figo's mobile app or online portal, you can expect the process of submitting claims to be simple and convenient. It's easy to upload invoices, medical records and treatment documents, plus you can also see and monitor your claim status without running into any issues.
  • Claims Speed (8th out of 18): Once you've submitted your claim, Figo is generally quick in processing it and reimbursing you. We found that simple claims with complete documentation often receive the fastest reviews, though complex ones that require specialist care may extend the process due to additional documentation.
  • Claims Fairness (17th out of 18): Based on our evaluation, the most common source of disputes involve Figo's too-broad interpretation of pre-existing conditions. The company has a tendency to link new diagnoses to historical records and deny subsequent claims for related conditions when earlier ones were approved.
  • Appeals (18th out of 18): Figo's appeals process is accessible, but successful reversals are not as common, especially when pre-existing condition determinations have already been made. Decisions may be overturned if you provide evidence that directly contradicts the original determination, but it's wise to go in with realistic expectations about the likelihood of a different result.

Figo Pet Insurance Review: Our Process

To build our Figo rankings, my team and I analyzed more than 67,000 pet profiles across breeds, ages and states, collecting quotes, testing the buying and claims experience firsthand and reviewing policy documents line by line. Our national scores are based on a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll, each with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate. This profile reflects the most common pet owner scenario but won't apply equally to every pet, so we encourage you to use the breed, state and age breakdowns in this review to find where Figo lands for your specific situation.

We applied the same framework to Figo as every other provider in our study. For a full breakdown of how we score each category, visit our methodology page.
