Pumpkin Pet Insurance Review: Fast Facts
Is Pumpkin good for pet insurance?
Pumpkin leads as the best pet insurance company for dogs and cats, consistently earning high scores for affordability and customer experience. It's the strongest option for most cats and medium-sized dog breeds weighing 30 to 60 pounds.
Who is Pumpkin best and worst for?
Our analysis shows that Pumpkin is best for cat owners, first-time pet insurance buyers and those with breeds prone to orthopedic conditions who benefit from its uniform 14-day waiting period.
It performs less competitively for pet owners who need granular control over policy customization, owners of accident-prone pets who need faster accident coverage and those who own Scottish Terriers and Domestic Shorthairs, where Pumpkin's rates are less competitive compared to breed averages.
Should I choose Pumpkin over competitors?
Pumpkin is worth choosing if affordability and a smooth customer experience are your priorities. For pet owners who need more coverage flexibility, comparing Pumpkin against other top-ranked providers before committing is worth the extra step.
Is Pumpkin affordable?
While it's not the cheapest pet insurance company, Pumpkin offers the second-lowest average rate for cats at $19 monthly and third-lowest rate for dogs at $43 monthly. Its most competitive for medium-sized dogs (weighing 30 to 60 pounds) and most cat breeds, with savings of up to 58% compared to breed averages for dogs like Pulis and Welsh Springer Spaniels and up to 49% for cats like Norwegian Forest Cats.
What is Pumpkin's customer experience like?
Pumpkin ranks first overall for customer experience out of 18 providers, excelling across buying, claims and policy management. Its buying process completes in minutes with clear pricing and coverage information available before purchase, and its claims process is among the fastest in the market, with reimbursements arriving within 15 to 20 minutes through Pumpkin Now for eligible urgent care.
Does Pumpkin offer good coverage options?
Pumpkin's base plan covers a broad range of conditions including hereditary conditions, behavioral problems, alternative therapy and dental illnesses, but ranks 10th for cats and 11th for dogs due to limited policy customization options. It only has two reimbursement rates, a narrow deductible and annual limit range, plus fewer add-ons compared to higher-ranked providers, though its lack of breed restrictions and upper age limits makes it more accessible than many competitors for senior pets and higher-risk breeds.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance Ratings: How Does It Stack Up?
Pumpkin leads as the top overall pet insurance provider for dogs and cats in MoneyGeek's analysis, with its strongest score in customer experience. It offers the best value for medium-sized dog breeds that weigh from 30 to 60 pounds, such as Alaskan Huskies, Border Collies and Chow Chows, as well as cat breeds like Ragdolls, Birmans and Siberians.
My team and I rated each category below using a base profile of a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll, each with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate.
Pumpkin offers the second-cheapest rates for cats across nearly every breed in our study. For dogs, it ranks third overall and is competitive for most medium breeds between 30 and 60 pounds but not the cheapest option across the board.
Pumpkin leads in buying, claims and policy management, particularly excelling in claims appeals, claims fairness and account servicing. While admin support and app usability are its least competitive areas, both still rank in the top five out of 18 providers, so policyholders are unlikely to notice a difference in day-to-day interactions.
Pumpkin's coverage terms are straightforward but limited in flexibility, with a 14-day waiting period that applies to accidents, illnesses and ligament or knee conditions. It may be worth considering for pet owners who want broad standard coverage for everyday health risks, but not ideal for those who need granular control over policy customization or own accident-prone pets where a longer waiting period for accidents could leave them exposed early in the policy term.
Find out if Pumpkin is a good fit for your situation:

Pumpkin ranks first overall for cats in 39 states and for dogs in 25 states, leading in cat affordability in 24 of those states and customer experience nationwide. For cats, the 12 states where it falls below first, including California, Maryland and Minnesota, reflect lower affordability scores rather than any change in customer experience or coverage.
For dogs, its second-place affordability ranking across most states is enough to reach first overall in 25 states, but its 11th-place coverage ranking keeps it from the top spot in the remaining 26, particularly in higher-cost markets like California, Massachusetts and Washington D.C.

Coverage ranks 11th for dogs and 10th for cats regardless of breed, which is the one consistent gap in an otherwise strong breed-level performance.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Coverage Review
Pumpkin falls to 10th place for cats and 11th place for dogs in pet insurance coverage, with a base plan that features hereditary conditions, behavioral problems, alternative therapy and dental illnesses but has limited options for deductibles, annual limits, reimbursement rates and add-ons. In practice, this means fewer ways to adjust your policy to match your pet's specific health risks or your budget as needs change over time. Pet owners who don't need the full breadth of Pumpkin's standard coverage have limited ability to scale back and reduce their premium, which is worth factoring in before committing to a plan.
As for coverage activation, Pumpkin applies a 14-day waiting period uniformly to accidents, illnesses and ligament or knee conditions. This works in favor of owners of breeds prone to orthopedic conditions, since coverage kicks in relatively quickly for those issues, but it's not ideal owners of accident-prone pets who may need coverage before the waiting period ends.
Pumpkin has no upper age limits or breed restrictions during enrollment, making it a solid option for owners of breeds that other providers decline to cover, and for pet owners who are enrolling an older pet for the first time and would otherwise struggle to find a plan that accepts them.
I broke down Pumpkin's coverage offerings in the table below:

Pre-existing conditions | Curable conditions may be eligible for coverage after 180 symptom-free days |

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Coverage Add-On Review
Pumpkin only offers one optional add-on to expand your base policy: Pumpkin Wellness Club. It's worth considering for new pet owners or those with younger pets who need frequent wellness visits, vaccinations and routine bloodwork as part of a regular preventive care schedule. Pet owners whose veterinary costs for routine care already fall within the annual limits per tier will also get the most value, especially at the Premium and Elite levels where tick, flea and heartworm prevention add substantial coverage at a predictable monthly cost.
However, owners of older pets whose routine care needs are already established and predictable, or those who simply prefer to pay out of pocket for wellness visits, are unlikely to recoup the monthly cost.
Learn more about Pumpkin's coverage add-on below:
Pumpkin Wellness Club is a standalone add-on that covers routine care costs not included in standard pet insurance, with three available tiers: Essential, Premium and Elite. All members get access to PawSupport, a 24/7 pet health helpline, regardless of tier.

How Much Does Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cost? (Affordability Review)
Pumpkin ranks second for cat affordability and third for dog affordability, with average monthly rates of $19 for cats and $43 for dogs based on our standard profiles. My analysis shows that these rates represent savings of 42% for cats and 30% for dogs compared to the national average. How well those savings translate depends on your pet's profile:
Cheapest for: Most cat breeds, medium dog breeds (30 to 60 lbs), small dog breeds (20 to 30 lbs), toy dog breeds (under 10 lbs), giant dog breeds (over 100 lbs)
Affordable for: Large dog breeds (61 to 100 lbs)
Expensive for: Scottish Terriers, Domestic Shorthairs
My team and I analyzed Pumpkin's pet insurance costs by breed, state and pet age to give you a clearer picture of where its rates are most competitive and where they fall short. If Pumpkin ranks in the top three for your pet's breed and state, it's likely one of the more affordable options you'll find when you get a quote.
Pumpkin's average monthly rates for dogs range from $20 to $73, while its cat rates average between $16 and $34 per month. Its strongest pricing advantage for dogs is with Pulis, Welsh Springer Spaniels and Tibetan Mastiffs, where savings reach 52% to 58% compared to breed averages. For cats, Norwegian Forest Cats, Birmans and Devon Rexes see the highest savings at 46% to 49%.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Customer Experience Review and Ratings
Pumpkin leads in customer experience for both dogs and cats, excelling across buying, claims and policy management overall. Its strongest performance is in the buying process, where it tops the rankings for onboarding, price transparency and sales support, making it one of the easiest insurers to evaluate and purchase from. For pet owners, this translates to a straightforward experience from quote to active policy, with claims submission and billing among the smoothest in the market.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance Buying Experience Review
Pumpkin earns the top buying experience ranking out of 18 providers, with first-place scores across every sub-category we evaluated. In our testing, the quote process completed in minutes, with clear pricing and coverage information available before any commitment is required. Below, I broke down Pumpkin's buying experience across three areas:
- Onboarding (1st out of 18): Pumpkin's onboarding process is fast and guided, walking pet owners through coverage options in a way that doesn't require prior insurance knowledge.
- Price Transparency (1st out of 18): Pumpkin displays pricing clearly during the quote process, with deductibles, reimbursement rates and annual limits visible before purchase.
- Sales Support (1st out of 18): Pumpkin earns its top sales support ranking by having a knowledgeable and patient support team, with agents willing to walk you through coverage details without rushing the process. Pumpkin's customer support is reachable by phone, live chat and email Monday through Saturday, with email responses promised within a day.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance Policy Management Experience Review
Pumpkin's policy management ranks first overall in our analysis, a result that holds across billing, account servicing and day-to-day self-service tasks. Where the buying experience earns its ranking through speed and clarity, policy management earns it through consistency, since pet owners can handle most routine tasks without having to contact support. Here's how Pumpkin's policy management experience breaks down:
- Billing and Renewals (1st out of 18): Pumpkin leads all providers in billing and renewals, allowing you to set your billing preferences at enrollment, with paperless billing available.
- Account Servicing (2nd out of 18): Account servicing ranks second, with pet owners able to access policy documents, track claims and update coverage details through the portal without friction.
- Admin Support (5th out of 18): Admin support is Pumpkin's weakest policy management area, having slower response times for more involved inquiries and limited phone availability. While it ranked fifth out of 18, pet owners who prefer phone-first support for complex policy questions may notice it.
- App UX (3rd out of 18): Pumpkin's app ranks third, with our team finding it functional and easy to use for routine tasks. It covers the core use cases well but doesn't quite match the experience of the top two providers for pet owners who manage their policy primarily through mobile.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance Claims Experience Review
Pumpkin ranks first for claims overall, driven by a submission process that removes most of the friction pet owners typically dread. For situations where speed matters most, Pumpkin offers Pumpkin Now, an expedited review service for pre-approval estimates and eligible claims that can put reimbursed funds in your account before you leave the vet. Here is how each area breaks down:
- Submission Ease (1st out of 18): Pumpkin's claims submission process is the easiest in our study, requiring little more than uploading a vet invoice through the portal. Expect an average processing time of 8 to 12 minutes from submission to approval. For time-sensitive situations, Pumpkin Now offers expedited processing during service hours (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST), though it's not available on Sundays, which is worth noting given that emergencies rarely follow business hours.
- Claims Speed (2nd out of 18): Pumpkin processes claims faster than all but one provider, with reimbursements consistently arriving within 24 to 48 hours. Pumpkin Now can accelerate this further for eligible claims, though it requires claims to be submitted through the Member Center or by veterinary staff through the hospital's Paw Portal, and your bank must be compatible with Pumpkin's payment system.
- Claims Fairness and Appeals (2nd out of 18): Pumpkin ranks second for claims fairness and second for appeals, meaning the vast majority of policyholders receive outcomes they consider fair and have a reliable path to contest decisions they disagree with.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance Review: Our Process
My team and I analyzed more than 67,000 pet profiles across breeds, ages and states to build our Pumpkin rankings, collecting quotes, testing the buying and claims experience firsthand and working through policy documents line by line. Our national scores are calculated using a base profile of a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate, a profile that reflects the most common pet owner scenario but shouldn't be treated as the final word for every pet.
We applied the same framework to Pumpkin as every other provider in our study. For a full breakdown, visit our methodology page.
Vet bills are unpredictable, and pet insurance is meant to reduce that financial exposure but only if the premium itself is manageable. Affordability carries the most weight in our scoring because a policy you can't sustain doesn't financially protect your pet.
My team and I gathered quotes directly to measure how the following factors impact Pumpkin's pricing, then used AI assistance to extrapolate across all possible pet profile combinations:
- Breed: Rates vary considerably by breed, particularly for dogs with known health risks. We studied hundreds of breeds across both dogs and cats to capture how Pumpkin prices across the full range of animals people own.
- State: Where you live affects what insurers charge. We gathered data across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. to show where Pumpkin leads on price and where it doesn't.
- Pet age: Premiums rise as pets get older, and the rate of increase varies by provider. We studied age profiles from under 1 through age 20 to show how Pumpkin's pricing holds up across a pet's entire life.
We evaluated the full policyholder journey using verified reviews from Trustpilot, Reddit and the Better Business Bureau, supplemented by our own firsthand testing of the buying and claims process. We broke the experience into three stages, each weighted to reflect how much it affects long-term satisfaction:
- Buying experience (20% of CX score): We assessed how easy it is to get an accurate quote, understand what you're buying and get real answers before committing. This stage matters most for first-time buyers but carries the least weight because a smooth purchase doesn't guarantee a smooth claim.
- Policy management (30% of CX score): This is the everyday experience of being a policyholder: updating coverage, managing payments, accessing documents and getting help when something changes. We evaluated digital tools, billing reliability and how well Pumpkin supports policyholders between claims.
- Claims (50% of CX score): This is the moment pet insurance either earns its cost or doesn't. We examined how easy it is to file, how quickly claims are processed, how fairly outcomes are decided and how disputes are handled. Claims carries the most weight because it's the only category that tests whether the coverage works.
A policy's real value isn't always clear until you're reading an explanation of benefits after a denied claim. We reviewed Pumpkin's policy documents in detail to identify the terms that matter most at claim time and give pet owners a complete picture before they buy. Our coverage evaluation focused on four areas:
- Core coverage: What conditions and treatments the base plan covers, including hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, dental illness and alternative therapies, as well as what it excludes.
- Flexibility: How much control you have over your deductible, annual limit, reimbursement rate and optional add-ons, and how that affects your out-of-pocket costs over time.
- Policy terms and conditions: Waiting periods, pre-existing condition rules and any clauses that could affect whether a claim gets paid, all of which are details most policyholders don't read until it's too late.
- Add-ons and eligibility: What optional coverage is available, how useful it is in practice and which pets and breeds qualify for coverage under Pumpkin's underwriting guidelines.
