Shifting the Gender Pay Gap: 28 US Cities Where Women Bring In More Money

By
  |

Equal Pay Day this year falls on Mar. 24, 2021. As an indicator of the gender pay gap between men and women, it shows just how much more a woman needs to work to earn the same amount as a man.

MoneyGeek discovered there is more than one Equal Pay Day. Women across the country get paid differently relative to men depending on the communities where they live and work.

Using data collected from the American Community Survey median income for individuals with full-time work for the past 12 months and using a starting point of Jan. 1, 2020, MoneyGeek calculated the pay gaps in 40 cities and all states to find the date in each location that a woman would need to work to match the same amount of a man’s full year’s earnings. Some equal pay dates are before Mar. 24 2021 while some dates are months to a year following the national day.

There are some cities where women do make more than men, such as Jacksonville, North Carolina; Skokie, Illinois and Alameda, California, but ultimately the gender pay gap is still undeniable. MoneyGeek also looked into the median earning for women in each city. The pay gap can affect women's financial independence, such as the ability to purchase a home rather than rent or buying a car. It may also affect women's ability to find safer cities with fewer crimes.

Here are 28 cities where women make equal or more than their male counterparts:

Methodology

To find the Equal Pay Day for each city, MoneyGeek analyzed data from the American Community Survey and used the median earnings for men and women who worked full time within the last 12 months to calculate the pay gaps for all cities. Using the beginning of 2020 as the starting point, the date which women would need to work to earn the equivalent to a full year’s earnings for a man was determined.
