Lemonade Pet Insurance Ratings: How Does It Stack Up?

Lemonade ranks fourth nationally for both dogs and cats in MoneyGeek's pet insurance analysis. Coverage is where it separates itself from the competition, taking the top spot for dogs and finishing second for cats. It performs best with medium-sized dog breeds (30 to 60 pounds) like Airedale Terriers, Portuguese Water Dogs and Shar Peis, along with cats like Abyssinians, Cornish Rexes and British Longhairs.

My team and I scored each category using standardized profiles of a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll, each with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate.

No other provider in our study outranks Lemonade for dog coverage, and it finishes just behind the leader for cats. The company is ideal for pet owners looking for the most flexibility in policy customization, as well as those who want immediate accident coverage.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Customer Experience Review and Ratings

Lemonade finishes 11th for customer experience, with particular strengths in policy management and claims. It performed well in billing and renewals within policy management, and claims speed under claims. The company fell behind in the buying process, specifically in price transparency and onboarding, so pet owners may need to do more legwork to understand what they're getting before committing to a policy.

Based on my team's testing, its service quality fits these profiles:

High-Level Customer Experience Fits
blueCheck icon

Best fit: Pet owners who prefer managing their policy digitally with minimal need for human support

blueCheck icon

Moderate fit: Those who file straightforward claims with clear documentation and want a fast, easy submission process

blueCheck icon

Worst fit: First-time pet insurance buyers who need guided support during the purchase process

My team and I examined each stage separately. Policy management and claims are Lemonade's strong suits. Buying lands in the middle tier, with price transparency as a notable pain point.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Buying Experience Review

Lemonade ranks 12th for buying experience out of 18 providers, with a quote process that is fast and fully self-serve. That setup works well for experienced pet insurance shoppers who know what they want, but first-time buyers who need more guidance before committing may get more out of providers with stronger advisory support built into the buying process.

  • Onboarding (12th out of 18): Lemonade's enrollment process for pet insurance is streamlined, allowing you to get a quote and purchase a policy fairly quickly. However, it's optimized for speed rather than education, so buyers who want guidance on coverage decisions during setup may feel underserved.
  • Price Transparency (13th out of 18): While Lemonade lets pet owners adjust deductibles, reimbursement rates and annual limits in real time to see how each change affects their premium, it doesn't offer much guidance on questions like whether a higher reimbursement rate is worth the added cost or whether an add-on makes sense for a particular pet.
  • Sales Support (11th out of 18): In our testing, access to human support is limited with Lemonade, with most pre-purchase assistance routed through chatbots and self-service resources, which is not ideal for buyers who have complex questions or want personalized guidance before committing.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Policy Management Experience Review

Lemonade's policy management experience trails in 11th place, built on a self-service model that handles routine tasks well but shows its limits when policyholders need more than the app can offer. For pet owners who stay within Lemonade's digital ecosystem, day-to-day policy management is largely frictionless. Those who need personalized help or run into account issues outside standard workflows are more likely to notice the gaps.

  • Account Servicing (11th out of 18): We found that most common account tasks, including viewing coverage details, updating payment methods and managing multiple pets, can be completed through the app without contacting support. Where the experience becomes more inconsistent is when requests fall outside standard workflows, such as coverage disputes or retroactive account changes, where the self-service model is less equipped to help.
  • Admin Support (10th out of 18): With Lemonade, straightforward requests like document retrieval and basic account questions are generally resolved without much friction. However, reaching human support for complex issues can often take more effort than it should.
  • App UX (13th out of 18): Lemonade's app makes it easy to access policy documents, check billing information and track claims status, but it tends to route users toward automated support, which can be frustrating when you're dealing with anything outside a routine request.
  • Billing and Renewals (5th out of 18): Billing is one of Lemonade's clearest strengths in policy management, with autopay setup, recurring payments and renewal processes being smooth and largely automatic. That said, friction may still occur, particularly on coverage changes and payment issue resolution.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Claims Experience Review

Ranking 11th for claims experience, Lemonade provides a claims process that's easy to follow but offset by more mixed outcomes on fairness and appeals. Claims speed is where it pulls ahead of other competitors, but how a claim gets resolved is where the scores reflect more variation in policyholder outcomes.

  • Submission Ease (12th out of 18): Submitting a claim through Lemonade's app is relatively straightforward, though follow-up documentation requests can become more extensive in certain situations.
  • Claims Speed (7th out of 18): Lemonade processes straightforward claims quickly, with same-day decisions and next-day reimbursements available for claims with clear documentation. Complex claims involving medical history reviews, specialist care or potential pre-existing conditions can take longer, with additional record requests often adding to the timeline.
  • Claims Fairness (11th out of 18): In our evaluation, claims that clearly fell within coverage guidelines were handled consistently. That said, pet owners may run into friction around pre-existing condition terms, where a condition may be flagged during medical history review and excluded from reimbursement.
  • Appeals (13th out of 18): Pet owners who disagree with a claim decision can submit an appeal with Lemonade, and outcomes can shift when additional veterinary records or supporting documentation are provided. However, reversing a denial tied to pre-existing conditions or policy exclusions is not always straightforward, and pet owners going through the process should expect to provide multiple rounds of documentation and wait longer than they might for a standard claim decision.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Coverage Review

Lemonade's pet insurance coverage ranks first for dogs and second for cats, a result driven by the depth of policy customization it offers. It has five annual limit tiers reaching up to $100,000, four deductible options between $100 and $750, and four reimbursement rates from 60% to 90%. For pet owners whose budgets or coverage needs shift over time, that flexibility translates into a plan that can be adjusted as a pet ages rather than one that forces a tradeoff between cost and financial protection.

Lemonade is one of the few pet insurers with no waiting period for accidents, ideal for accident-prone pets. For orthopedic conditions, its 30-day wait is shorter than the six-month window some providers impose, which is beneficial for owners of breeds prone to joint or ligament issues who want coverage in place sooner.

That said, Lemonade only accepts pets up to age 10 or 14 depending on breed, so those with older pets should enroll before that threshold is reached to avoid losing access to coverage altogether. Its pet insurance is also only available in 42 states and Washington, D.C., which leaves pet owners in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming without access to its coverage.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Coverage Add-On Review

Lemonade provides six optional add-ons that expand base coverage to include routine care, vet exam fees, dental illness, physical therapy, behavioral conditions and end-of-life expenses. Each add-on is purchased separately and adds to the monthly premium, so pet owners who anticipate needing several of them should factor the cumulative cost, particularly since coverage for dental illness, physical rehabilitation and behavioral issues come standard in the base plans of some competing providers.

We broke down Lemonade's coverage add-ons below:

How Does Lemonade Pet Insurance Work?

Before committing to a policy, it's worth understanding how Lemonade's customer support works, what its claims process looks like and what your options are if you need to adjust or cancel your coverage.

Lemonade Pet Insurance Review: Our Process

To build our Lemonade rankings, my team and I analyzed more than 67,000 pet profiles across breeds, ages and states, collecting quotes, testing the buying and claims experience firsthand and reviewing policy documents line by line. Our national scores are based on a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll, each with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate. This profile reflects the most common pet owner scenario but won't apply equally to every pet, so we encourage you to use the breed, state and age breakdowns in this review to find where Lemonade lands for your specific situation.

We applied the same framework to Lemonade as every other provider in our study. For a full breakdown of how we score each category, visit our methodology page.
