Why Is Wisconsin Affordable?

The average cost of car insurance in Wisconsin ranks ninth most affordable nationwide because low population density outside Milwaukee, minimal traffic congestion, a competitive regional insurer market (West Bend Mutual, Acuity, Wisconsin Farm Bureau) and low litigation rates all keep costs down. The state's rural character and dispersed population reduce claims frequency compared to dense urban states.

Should You Choose Minimum or Full Coverage?

Minimum coverage averages $36 a month statewide, and full coverage averages $87 a month, a $51 a month ($612 a year) gap. With GEICO, the gap narrows to $34 a month ($21 minimum versus $55 full coverage).

Wisconsin's minimum includes MedPay and UM, making it more comprehensive than most at-fault state minimums. It covers no collision or comprehensive coverage, and the $10,000 property damage limit won't cover most vehicle repairs.

Wisconsin's deer collision risk and heavy winter weather make comprehensive coverage especially relevant. Figure out how much car insurance you need to choose the right level.

Cheapest Car Insurance in Wisconsin by City

GEICO is cheapest in nine of 10 analyzed Wisconsin cities; Travelers is cheapest in Milwaukee. Milwaukee is the most expensive city at $77 a month; Oshkosh is the cheapest at $43 a month, a $34 a month ($408 a year) gap. Milwaukee is Wisconsin's only major dense urban center, with elevated traffic density, higher vehicle theft rates and concentrated claims activity. Oshkosh and Appleton ($43 to $44 a month) are mid-size Fox Valley cities with low claims frequency.

Madison ($47 a month) and Green Bay ($48 a month) are Wisconsin's second- and third-largest cities but rank among the cheapest, with lower traffic density, low theft rates and university and municipal demographics. Kenosha ($60 a month) and Racine ($60 a month) tie as the second-most-expensive cities, both Chicago metro-adjacent with higher claims intensity.
