Why You Can Trust MoneyGeek's Rhode Island Ratings
MoneyGeek evaluated 10 insurance companies in Rhode Island, including national carriers and Rhode Island regional insurers. Rankings combine rate analysis, customer feedback, and coverage assessments across three weighted factors. MoneyGeek does not receive compensation tied to which companies rank highest. Rate data comes from Quadrant Information Services, which sources actual insurance filings across every ZIP code.
Affordability (60%)
Rate quotes were gathered for multiple driver profiles using a baseline 40-year-old male with good credit, clean record, no prior claims. Quotes covered full coverage with 100/300/100 BI, $100,000 PD, and UM/UIM matching state minimums or higher. Rates reflect RI's most recently filed/approved insurer filings. Discounts applied where applicable include multi-policy, autopay, paperless, good-driver. Quotes based on published carrier filings, not individual quote forms.
Customer Experience (30%)
Customer satisfaction data was compiled from J.D. Power studies (including the 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study and the 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study), AM Best financial strength ratings, and multi-platform review aggregation. NAIC complaint indexes also feed the composite score. J.D. Power scores shown in each carrier section are one input to the composite, not the full ranking.
Coverage Options (10%)
Coverage scoring measures each provider's range of coverage types and Rhode Island-specific add-on availability. Standard coverages (bodily injury liability, property damage liability, uninsured motorist coverage, medical payments coverage, comprehensive, collision coverage) are included in the baseline score. Add-on coverages weighted in the score include accident forgiveness, new car replacement, rideshare endorsements, gap insurance, custom parts coverage, mechanical breakdown insurance, and pay-per-mile or telematics-based programs. Coverages restricted or unavailable under state law are excluded from the score for all carriers.
*Rates and rankings on this page reflect a 40-year-old male driver with good credit and a clean record. Full coverage rates use 100/300/100,000 liability limits with a $1,000 comprehensive and collision deductible. Minimum coverage rates use Rhode Island's mandatory 25/50/25 liability limits without comprehensive or collision.
**USAA is excluded from all rankings because it is available only to military members and their families, which limits its accessibility for most readers.
Similar scores can reflect very different strengths in Rhode Island:
- Amica (4.79/5) and Travelers (4.52/5) are separated by only 0.27 points. Amica has a higher customer experience score (5/5 vs. 4.54/5), while Travelers is ahead on coverage options (4th vs. 5th coverage rank).
- There's only a 0.17 difference between State Farm (4.41/5) and Quincy (4.24/5). State Farm ranks #1 for best rate-to-value, with an $89/month full-coverage rate, but Quincy's $85/month rate is lower.
- The overall score for Progressive (4.01/5) is 0.40 points lower than State Farm's 4.41/5. But Progressive's 4.78/5 coverage score is nearly twice as high as State Farm's 2.50/5.
Rhode Island is the only New England state using pure comparative negligence (Rhode Island General Laws Section 9-20-4). Drivers can recover damages even if mostly at fault, with the award reduced by their fault percentage.

Comprehensive coverage is available from all five top Rhode Island carriers as an add-on to liability-only policies. In Rhode Island, this can be valuable given urban vehicle density in Providence, Pawtucket, and Cranston, where theft and vandalism claims are more frequent than in rural areas.
Every insurer must offer uninsured motorist coverage on every policy. But it becomes mandatory only when the insured elects bodily injury limits above the 25/50 state minimum. Insurers must also offer UM Property Damage at a $25,000 minimum. All five top Rhode Island carriers offer UM/UIM. With Rhode Island's 12.4% uninsured rate, higher than most New England areas, UM/UIM is worth adding even when optional.
Collision coverage is also available across all five carriers and pairs with UM/UIM to provide more complete financial protection against at-fault and uninsured-driver scenarios.
Medical payments coverage is offered across the top five. Because Rhode Island does not require PIP, MedPay is the primary first-party medical option for drivers in the state.
Progressive is the only top-five carrier in Rhode Island offering a rideshare endorsement for Uber and Lyft drivers. It covers the period when a driver is logged into the app but has not yet accepted a ride. This fills the coverage gap between personal auto policies and TNC company coverage.

Best Rhode Island Car Insurance: FAQ
What is the minimum car insurance required in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island requires 25/50/25 liability coverage per RIGL Section 31-47-2: $25,000 bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage liability. Rhode Island does not require PIP. Every insurer must offer UM/UIM bodily injury on every policy, but UM/UIM becomes mandatory only when the insured elects BI limits above the 25/50 minimum. For minimum-limits policies, UM/UIM is optional and can be rejected in writing. Insurers must also offer UM Property Damage at a $25,000 minimum.
What happens if I drive without insurance in Rhode Island?
Per RIGL Section 31-47-9(a), penalties are graduated. A first offense carries a $100 to $500 fine and a mandatory three-month license and registration suspension. A second offense results in a $500 fine and a six-month suspension. A third offense causes a $1,000 fine and up to a one-year suspension. Drivers must also provide insurance information at vehicle registration and keep coverage active throughout the registration period.
Why is Amica Mutual considered the top carrier in Rhode Island?
Amica Mutual Insurance is headquartered in Lincoln, Rhode Island, the only top-five carrier based in the state. It has a deep Rhode Island market presence and consistently gets high customer satisfaction scores. In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Amica scores 735, 110 points above the 625 regional average and 101 points above State Farm, the next-highest rated carrier among the top five. What is pure comparative negligence and how does it affect my Rhode Island claim?
Per RIGL Section 9-20-4, Rhode Island follows pure comparative negligence. An injured plaintiff can recover damages even if 99% at fault, with the award reduced by their percentage of fault. Rhode Island is the only New England state using this rule; Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut all use modified comparative negligence with a 51% bar.
In a mixed-fault collision claim, Rhode Island drivers can still recover proportionally even when their share of fault is large.
Is UM/UIM coverage actually required in Rhode Island?
Every Rhode Island auto insurer must offer uninsured motorist coverage on every policy, but it becomes mandatory only when the insured buys bodily injury coverage above the state minimum. At minimum limits, UM/UIM is optional and can be rejected in writing. Insurers must also offer UM Property Damage with a minimum limit of $25,000.
What is the SR-22 process in Rhode Island after a DUI?
A Rhode Island DUI conviction requires an SR-22 filing. This is filed by your insurer with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles as proof of financial responsibility. First-offense penalties for BAC between .08 and .10 include a $100 to $300 fine, 10 to 60 hours of community service, a 30 to 180-day license suspension and a $500 highway safety assessment fee. A third or subsequent offense within 10 years is a felony carrying mandatory 3-5 years imprisonment when BAC is .15 or higher.
