The minimum car insurance requirement in Florida comprises property damage liability and personal injury protection (PIP) with the following limits:

  • $10,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP)

With a property damage liability limit of $10,000, if you get involved in an at-fault accident and the damage costs are $10,000 or less, the insurer will cover all the expenses. However, if it is more than the maximum limit, for instance, $20,000, you will pay $10,000 out of pocket.

Florida’s minimum coverage policy does not include bodily injury liability coverage. That means your policy will not cover injuries to third parties in case of an at-fault accident.

WHAT IS PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION (PIP)?

Personal injury protection (PIP) is a requirement for all auto insurance policies in Florida. PIP, often referred to as no-fault insurance, covers the policyholder and their passengers' medical expenses (and maybe their health insurance deductible), lost wages, funeral costs and other costs that may arise after an accident, regardless of who is at fault. It may also cover costs associated with an injury that occurs when you are not driving, such as if you are hit by a car while walking or riding your bike.

PIP does not cover property damage or costs associated with the other driver's injuries.

To have coverage for the above, you need to include bodily injury liability and property damage liability on your Jacksonville auto policy. Florida requires property damage liability but at a very low limit. Insurance professionals recommend an auto insurance policy with at least $100,000 bodily injury liability per person, $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident and $100,000 property damage liability per accident. Plus, if you finance or lease your vehicle or want financial protection for it in an at-fault accident or non-collision event, such as flooding or theft, you should add collision and comprehensive coverage to create a full coverage policy.

Cheapest Full Coverage Car Insurance in Jacksonville

The insurers offering the average cheapest full coverage policy in Jacksonville are:

  • GEICO: $1,092 per year
  • State Farm: $1,199 per year

Direct General is the highest-priced insurer for a full coverage policy in Jacksonville at roughly $2,396 a year.

On average, Travelers has the cheapest full coverage auto insurance in Florida, costing $1,394 per year as of October 2022. That shows how location can affect rates since the cheapest insurer in Jacksonville, GEICO, charges much less than Travelers’ average statewide cost.

A full coverage policy provides added financial protection through collision and comprehensive coverage.

  • Comprehensive insurance: If your car gets damaged in a non-accident incident, such as theft, fire, weather events or vandalism, comprehensive insurance covers the costs related to the repair or replacement of your vehicle.
  • Collision insurance: If your car gets damaged in an at-fault accident due to a collision with another vehicle or an object, such as a tree, fence or light post, collision insurance pays to repair or replace it. Collision also covers rollovers.

Full coverage car insurance is ideal for most drivers. However, the policy may not be a good choice for individuals with older cars that have a very depreciated value.

Cheapest Car Insurance in Jacksonville After a Driving Offense

Jacksonville drivers with a moving violation find the average cheapest full coverage auto insurance from the following companies:

  • Speeding ticket: State Farm ($1,348 per year)

  • DUI: State Farm ($1,348 per year)

MONEYGEEK EXPERT TIP

Adding accident forgiveness to your auto policy will stop your premium from increasing after your first at-fault accident. If you have a clean motor vehicle record, accident forgiveness is a great coverage to have because even the safest drivers may find themselves involved in an at-fault accident and face the substantial premium increase that comes with it if they don't have this additional coverage. Some companies even award accident forgiveness at no cost after a period. Examples include GEICO and Progressive. — Mark Friedlander, Director, Corporate Communications, Insurance Information Institute

Cheapest Car Insurance in Jacksonville for Teens and Their Families

On average, the following companies provide the most affordable auto insurance in Jacksonville for a full coverage family policy that includes a teen driver:

  • Nationwide: $2,720 per year for female teens; $3,068 per year for male teens
  • State Farm: $3,580 per year for female teens
  • GEICO: $3,877 per year for male teens

Of the insurers we evaluated, Allstate has the highest average premium for female teens on a family policy, costing about $4,774 per year. Travelers is the most expensive for male teens, costing around $5,562 annually.

Female teens tend to pay a lower premium than male teens because they are seen as less risky to insure — for example, Nationwide charges male teens around $348 more a year than female teens. But rates do tend to even out in young adulthood.

In Jacksonville, for a 16-year-old male driver on a full coverage family policy, it is about $4,449 yearly. An individual policy costs roughly $9,389, a difference of around $4,940 per year.
