Travelers is worth a quote if you've upgraded your rental unit, own items that exceed the per-category payout caps most standard policies set, or already carry Travelers auto insurance. It's not the right call for price-sensitive shoppers. MoneyGeek's national dataset ranks Travelers' affordability at 1.50 out of 5, among the lowest scores in the analysis, which puts its premiums above average even for good-credit renters with clean claims histories.
Travelers' base policy includes something most competitors charge extra for or exclude outright. The standard policy covers fire, smoke, theft, vandalism and windstorm, matching what most renters policies offer on perils. It also covers betterments: improvements you've paid for in your rental, up to 10% of your personal property limit. Most major insurers sell that protection as a separate add-on.
Travelers' complaint record and its satisfaction score tell different stories. Its formal complaint volume through the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is lower than expected for a company its size, which reflects well on claim outcomes. Its J.D. Power 2025 ranking landed below the industry average, which measures day-to-day interactions, not just whether claims get paid. For renters who've had frustrating experiences with insurers before, the distance between those two findings is worth factoring into the decision.
