Comparing World Trips vs. Other Companies
World Trips ranks 9th out of 13 companies in our travel insurance analysis with an overall score of 89, reflecting balanced performance across categories without dominating any single metric.
1 | World Nomads | 93 | 98 | 86 | 95 | 89 |
2 | Generali | 92 | 94 | 88 | 100 | 89 |
3 | Allianz | 91 | 86 | 89 | 100 | 100 |
9 | World Trips | 89 | 85 | 87 | 95 | 89 |
10 | AXA | 88 | 85 | 87 | 100 | 89 |
World Trips performs adequately across most categories without standing out. The company offers $1 million medical evacuation coverage on Explore and Elevate plans, which is more than most competitors. This strength doesn't offset its lower overall coverage score. Service ratings match several other providers but fall short of top performers like Allianz.
World Trips User Reviews
World Trips has a 4 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot from nearly 2,000 reviews. Squaremouth data shows the same 4 out of 5 overall rating. Pre-trip service scores 4, while post-trip service also scores 4.
What Customers Love
- Easy online buying process and clear policy documents
- Good 24/7 support for medical emergencies. One customer said the company helped find a pediatrician who made a house call in South America
- Quick claims processing for weather-related cruise delays and medical emergency reimbursements. Some customers received payment within days
Common Complaints
- Difficulty supplying all requested documentation for claims tied to international medical incidents
- CBPconnect for policies issued before November 2025 provides limited claim status visibility, leaving customers unable to track progress
- Post-trip service ratings fall below pre-trip scores, pointing to uneven support after travel
What’s Covered by World Trips Travel Insurance
All three plans cover cancellation for illness, injury, or death of traveler, family member, or travel companion; natural disasters; mandatory evacuation; job loss (with conditions); jury duty; home damage from fire or flood; terrorist incidents at destination within 30 days; and travel supplier financial default.
World Trips reimburses unused nonrefundable trip costs, additional transportation to return home or continue to destination, and extra accommodation expenses if you must cut your trip short due to covered reasons like injury or family member illness.
Coverage includes hospital treatment, physician and surgical fees, prescription medications, ambulance services, emergency dental treatment (sublimits apply), and medical evacuation to nearest adequate facility. If you break your leg skiing abroad, the plan covers hospital care, surgery, and evacuation to the U.S. if medically necessary.
Escape offers excess medical coverage (pays after primary insurance). Explore and Elevate provide primary coverage requiring no coordination of benefits.
All plans cover lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and personal effects; baggage delay reimbursement for essential purchases; and sporting equipment (with upgrades on higher-tier plans). If airlines lose your checked bag for 12+ hours, you can purchase necessary clothing and toiletries for reimbursement.
Explore and Elevate reimburse meals, accommodation, ground transportation, and communication costs during covered delays exceeding five hours (Explore) or three hours (Elevate). A six-hour flight delay due to mechanical issues triggers reimbursement for meals and hotel costs.
Optional Add-On Coverages
- Cancel for any reason (CFAR): Available on Explore and Elevate only. Must be purchased within 21 days of the initial deposit and is unavailable within 48 hours of departure. Reimburses 50% or 75% of nonrefundable costs when cancellation occurs at least 48 hours before departure.
- Rental Car Damage: Provides collision damage waiver and theft protection for rental vehicles. Available on all three plans.
- Adventure Sports Coverage: Extends coverage to bungee jumping, hang gliding and parasailing. Offered as an upgrade on all plans.
- Pet Coverage: Covers cancellation due to pet death or critical illness, veterinary expenses while traveling with a pet, and kennel boarding fees when a trip is delayed.
- Enhanced Medical Evacuation: Doubles medical evacuation limits and allows transport to a hospital of choice instead of the nearest adequate facility.
What’s NOT Covered
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless coverage is purchased within 14 days of the initial deposit and waiver requirements are met. World Trips defines a pre-existing condition as any illness or condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received within two years before coverage begins.
- High-risk activities without an upgrade include professional sports, extreme activities such as BASE jumping, racing, and aviation other than as a fare-paying passenger.
- Excluded circumstances include travel against a physician’s advice, suicide, intentional self-harm, illegal acts, elective procedures, mental or nervous disorders unless hospitalization occurs, intoxication, war and nuclear contamination.
- Coverage may be limited for destinations subject to U.S. State Department travel warnings.
Who Should Buy World Trips Travel Insurance?
World Trips excels in medical coverage, making it ideal for specific profiles rather than a universal top choice.
The $1 million medical evacuation coverage on Explore and Elevate exceeds many competitors, benefiting travelers concerned about international medical emergencies or remote destinations. Budget-conscious domestic travelers find value in Escape's essential protection at competitive rates. International business travelers benefit from 24/7 multilingual assistance and worldwide provider networks.
World Trips may not suit travelers requiring top-tier service. Allianz (100 score) and Travelex (99) rate higher than World Trips' 89. Cost-focused travelers find better value with World Nomads and Generali. Those valuing comprehensive coverage should consider IMG (95) and Tin Leg (94) over World Trips' 87.

FAQ: World Trips Travel Insurance
What's the difference between Member Portal and CBPconnect?
Member Portal is for policies bought on or after November 5, 2025. CBPconnect handles older policies. You can submit claims and manage your policy through either system, but Member Portal tracks claims faster.
Can I purchase World Trips coverage for one-way international trips?
Yes. You'll need to provide a return date even for one-way travel, and coverage ends on that date regardless of whether you return.
Does World Trips accept credit card chargebacks as proof of loss?
No. World Trips requires documentation of actual loss or expenses. Chargebacks don't constitute proof since the charge was reversed.
Is there a family discount for insuring multiple travelers?
No specific family discounts exist. Each traveler requires individual coverage based on age and trip details, though children under 18 may have different pricing.
What happens if my travel supplier goes bankrupt after I purchase coverage?
Supplier default is covered if bankruptcy occurs more than 14 days after policy purchase. Claims require proof of nonrefundable payments and bankruptcy filing documentation.
