PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization, a health insurance plan that covers both in-network and out-of-network care without requiring referrals. PPO plans are the most flexible major plan type available on the Health Insurance Marketplace and through employers, letting you see any licensed provider with no need to choose a primary care physician first.
You can book directly with any licensed provider, in or out of network, with no referral required. Out-of-network visits are covered but cost more than in-network care, which distinguishes a PPO from other health insurance plan types like HMO and EPO that restrict coverage to in-network providers only. Though, staying in-network keeps your out-of-pocket costs lower at every point of care.
