FAQs About the Best Car Insurance in Maine

The best car insurance in Maine for you will depend on your profile and coverage requirements. We have answered the most common questions to help you learn more.

What is the best way to figure out which insurer is best for me in Maine?

Craig Joncas
Craig Joncas:

Different factors can make up the “best” car insurance for each individual or family. For some, it may just be the cheapest option for the required coverage that turns out to be the best. Others may value factors like customer service, claims-paying experience, the health of the insurance company or more.

One great resource is the Maine Insurance Bureau. It can provide you with basic education and an overview of some of the complaint history and policy forms of the state’s largest employers. In addition to some educational material, this may provide a starting point for deciding which insurers to contact for quotes.

Another good resource to confirm the customer experience would be JD Power. From here, you can either contact each insurer directly or contact a local broker who can quote multiple carriers. I usually recommend doing both! Having 2-4 quotes from different types of insurers is a good idea. Just make sure they are quoting apples-to-apples coverage so you know it is fair. You may want to have your coverage needs decided on ahead of time or have your broker help you decide. Make sure to ask how you can benefit from discounts if available!

What are the best coverages to add to your car insurance policy in Maine?

Craig Joncas
Craig Joncas:

Basic insurance coverage typically involves liability for both bodily injury and property damage, collision, uninsured motorists and comprehensive insurance which covers damage that hasn't occurred due to an accident.

The first important item to establish is the minimum coverage required by law in Maine. To satisfy the financial responsibility law in Maine, you must buy a minimum of $50,000 liability for the injury to or death of any one person; $100,000 liability for one accident resulting in injury to or death of more than one person; and $25,000 liability for property damage. These amounts are usually shown as $50/100/25 on your insurance policy.

A combined single limit (that combine bodily injury and property damage liability) of $125,000 is also acceptable. You cannot register your vehicle without proof that you have this minimum amount of insurance. Uninsured motorist bodily injury of $50/100 (or a combined single limit of $100,000) and a minimum of $2,000 for medical payments coverage is also required. Most people should carry more than these minimums, and we would suggest 100/300/100 at a minimum.

In addition to these basic coverages, people should also consider an umbrella policy that would cover a liability of at least $1,000,000. In Maine, there is a $750,000 wrongful death statute. Finally, people without a AAA, or another roadside assistance package, may want to consider adding that to their insurance policy. Rental reimbursement can also be added, to cover the cost of a rental while the car is being repaired after an accident.
