Methodology

To find the best auto insurance in Maine, MoneyGeek considered evaluations from J.D. Power, AM Best and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). We compared 384 quotes from eight companies across three ZIP codes in Maine to discover the best auto insurance companies in the state.

We focused our evaluation of the top companies in Maine on specific driver profiles. We used these profiles to determine the best category winners because cost and quality of service can vary substantially amongst drivers.

The following weightings were used to obtain a MoneyGeek composite score:

  • General customer and claims satisfaction (60%): MoneyGeek ranked Maine providers on a scale of one to five, with customer and claims satisfaction surveys from J.D. Power each accounting for 30% of the total.
  • Affordability (30%): MoneyGeek analyzed Maine suppliers and assigned a five-point affordability grade, with the most economical firm receiving a five.
  • Financial stability (10%): MoneyGeek uses AM Best financial strength ratings to assess an insurer's capacity to pay claims even in difficult economic times.

We also changed the weightings within categories in several cases:

  • Affordability was given no weight in the best customer service category.
  • We utilized minimum coverage insurance rather than a full coverage policy for the best on a budget category.
  • If necessary, scores were adjusted for the cost to reflect rates based on a driver's age or driving history.
  • When organizations offered particular coverages that their competitors did not, we gave qualitative judgments.

We utilized the following limits while assessing a full coverage policy:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $100,000 property damage liability
  • Comprehensive and collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

MoneyGeek compiled Maine premiums using an example driver profile of a 40-year-old man with a clean driving record driving a Toyota Camry. Quadrant Information Services provided quotes for average premiums based on a full coverage insurance. More information on MoneyGeek's auto insurance methodology, including how we collect and evaluate data, can be found here.
