We've made comparing travel insurance plans easier:  There are dozens of travel insurance companies all offering multiple unique travel insurance plans.  We allow you to compare coverage features side-by-side and compare quotes for each travel insurance plan.

Compare travel insurance affordability: Travel insurance costs 3% to 12% of your total trip cost, with age being the main price driver above 5% of trip cost. Expect to pay $75 to $200 for a $2,500 trip if you're under 50, $150 to $400 if you're 65, and $300 to $700 if you're 75 or older.

Compare coverage to get the right travel insurance plan: We recommend having trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage of $50,000-$250,000, evacuation coverage and a moderate level of baggage coverage.  If you are planning more dangerous activities, like scuba diving, make sure your plan covers your activities.

Compare Travel Insurance Plans: Side-by-Side

We organized 42 travel insurance plans into three categories based on coverage levels and features to simplify your travel insurance comparison process. The main differences between categories are medical coverage limits, evacuation amounts, and premium features like "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) coverage.

Basic plans work for healthy travelers on standard trips under $5,000 who want essential protection at the lowest cost. Comprehensive plans provide the best balance of coverage and value for most travelers, especially trips between $2,500-$15,000. Premium plans offer maximum coverage limits and specialized features for expensive trips, seniors, or travelers with high-risk activities.

Basic Travel Insurance Plans Comparison

These plans provide fundamental coverage including trip cancellation and medical coverage at lower prices. They work well for healthy travelers taking standard trips under $5,000. Medical coverage ranges from $25,000-$50,000, which covers routine medical emergencies but won't provide protection for for serious incidents requiring surgery or evacuation.

How to Compare Travel Insurance

Travel insurance comparison is challenging because plans use different coverage names for similar benefits, vary widely in their exclusions, and price identical coverage differently based on your age, destination and trip details. When you compare travel insurance plans, focus on coverage that matches your specific risks and budget. We recommend evaluating plans across these core factors that directly impact your financial protection and out-of-pocket costs.

We make this easier by organizing 42 plans from 13 companies into clear categories and showing exactly how factors like age and trip cost affect your travel insurance quotes. Also, see our guide to how travel insurance works and what it covers.

  1. 1

    Compare Trip Cancellation & Interruption

Trip cancellation reimburses 100% of non-refundable costs if you can't travel for covered reasons like illness, job loss or severe weather. Standard plans cover 10-15 specific reasons, while "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) allows cancellation for any reason with 50-90% reimbursement.

Trip interruption pays for the portion of your trip you missed plus additional return costs if you need to come home early during travel. If you paid $3,000 for a 10-day trip but had to come home after 6 days, the insurance would reimburse you for the 4 unused days (roughly $1,200).  This coverage is valuable for trips over $5,000 or lasting more than two weeks.

    • CFAR requires purchase within 10-21 days of trip deposit
    • Must cancel 48+ hours before departure for CFAR benefits
    • Standard plans need qualifying cancellation reasons with documentation
  2. 2

    Compare Travel Insurance Medical Coverage

Travel emergency medical coverage ranges from $25,000 to $1 million, with most travelers needing $100,000-$250,000 for good protection.

    • Minimum $100,000 medical for basic trips
    • $250,000+ recommended for adventure activities
    • Primary medical insurance coverage pays first without your health insurance, contributing while secondary coverage only pays after your primary insurer.
  3. 3

Compare Plans for Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusions

Travel insurance plans exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless you purchase a waiver within 10-21 days of your initial trip deposit. You must also be medically stable when buying coverage.

Lookback periods vary from 60-180 days, with definitions ranging from any medical attention to just symptom changes. This timing requirement makes early purchase important for travelers with health concerns.

  4. 4

    Compare Additional Coverage Options

Baggage coverage protects lost or stolen items ($500-$4,000 with per-item limits), while travel delay coverage reimburses expenses from covered delays ($100-200 per day). Adventure sports coverage is available on select plans for activities like scuba diving and skiing, while rental car coverage provides collision protection.

    • Baggage claims require receipts and police reports for theft
    • Travel delays typically need 5-12 hour delays to trigger coverage
    • Adventure sports and rental car coverage often require additional premiums
    • Rental car coverage may duplicate your existing auto insurance or credit card benefits
  5. 5

    Compare Travel Insurance Quotes

Travel insurance cost varies by company for similar coverage.  Get three to five quotes before buying.  The biggest factors that impact your travel insurance quotes are: 1) total trip cost 2) age of travelers 3) destination 4) number of travelers 5) coverage terms and conditions in the plan you choose.  Age is the biggest factor for older travelers, with 75-year-old travelers paying 300-500% more than those aged 20-50 for identical coverage.
