Average Pet Insurance Cost in Texas (2026 Report)

How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost in Texas?

In Texas, pet insurance costs an average of $49 per month ($590 annually) based on aggregated pricing for a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate. Texas prices 4% below the national average, ranking 35th nationally for affordability.

The state average splits by pet type:

  • Dogs: $64 per month ($767 annually), 4% below the national dog average
  • Cats: $33 per month ($399 annually), 4% below the national cat average

These figures are state benchmarks, not quotes. Breed, age, coverage selection and location within Texas all affect where a specific pet's rate lands relative to these numbers.

We studied pet insurance pricing to establish Texas cost benchmarks and show how premiums vary based on different factors. Our cost analysis uses standardized policy parameters for consistent comparisons across pet profiles.

How We Calculated Average Pet Insurance Costs

Our published averages represent modeled premiums for standardized pet insurance drawn from over 67,000 pet profiles across 18 major pet insurance providers in Texas. The baseline profiles used throughout our analysis are 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate.

Averages were calculated in two ways:

  • Texas state benchmark average: The monthly state average reflects the modeled premium for a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and 7-year-old Ragdoll in our dataset using the baseline policy parameters.
  • Segment averages: To demonstrate cost variation, we calculated average modeled premiums for our baseline profile while isolating individual variables, including:
    • Breeds
    • Ages

Segment averages aggregate modeled pricing patterns across the full dataset so readers can compare how premiums change based on breed and age in Texas.

What Factors Affect Pet Insurance Costs in Texas?

Texas pet insurance premiums vary based on four factors: coverage selection, breed, age and location within the state. Each one affects the insurer's estimate of how likely a pet is to generate claims and how costly those claims will be. This means two pets on identical policy terms can land far apart depending on where in the state they live, and what breed and age they are.

    Coverage selection

Coverage selection is the lever most directly in a policyholder's control, and in Texas it accounts for some of the widest premium swings in the dataset. Each of the three components below changes how costs are split between you and the insurer when a claim is filed.

    • Annual limit: The annual limit caps what the insurer pays out in a policy year. A higher limit expands the insurer's financial exposure, and that expanded risk is priced into the monthly premium. Choosing a lower limit reduces the insurer's obligation and brings the rate down accordingly.

    • Deductible: The deductible is the amount paid out of pocket before the insurer covers any eligible costs, and it resets once per policy year. A low deductible means the insurer contributes to nearly every claim, which increases the monthly premium to offset that exposure. Raising the deductible shifts more initial cost to the policyholder and lowers the monthly rate.

    • Reimbursement rate: This determines the percentage of covered costs the insurer pays once the deductible is met. A 100% reimbursement rate eliminates cost-sharing entirely, and the premium is priced to match that arrangement. At 70% or 80%, the policyholder absorbs a share of each eligible claim, which the insurer reflects as a lower monthly rate.

    pet icon
    Breed

Breed affects pet insurance cost in Texas because some breeds are more prone to hereditary conditions and costly health problems than others. Among dogs, premiums vary by as much as 264% between the least expensive breed, the Chihuahua, and the most expensive, the Olde English Bulldogge. Cat premiums show less variation, with a 56% gap between the Bombay at the low end and the Australian Mist at the high end.

    usMap icon
    Location within the state

ZIP code affects pet insurance premiums in Texas because veterinary costs aren't uniform across the state. What a clinic charges in Dallas or Austin reflects a different cost structure than what a rural practice charges in West Texas. Insurers build those regional cost differences into their pricing, which means two pets with identical profiles and coverage terms can land at different monthly rates depending on where in Texas they live.

    birthday icon
    Age

Pet insurance premiums in Texas track closely with age because the likelihood of a claim, and the cost of that claim, rises as pets get older. Chronic conditions become more common in senior pets, which insurers reflect directly in the monthly rate, resulting in a 373% difference between age one, the least expensive point in our dataset, and age 15, the most expensive.

Average Pet Insurance Cost in Texas by Breed

Breed affects pet insurance rates in Texas because insurers price each one against its documented claim history and likelihood of hereditary health conditions. According to our analysis, dog premiums run from $34 per month to $125 per month. Cat premiums cover a narrower range, from $31 per month to $48 per month.

Average Pet Insurance Cost in Texas by Dog Breed

Dog insurance in Texas costs an average between $34 per month for a Chihuahua to $125 per month for an Olde English Bulldogge. Below, we group each breed by its distance from the state average for dogs into five cost tiers.

The distribution in Texas skews heavily toward the lower tiers: 100 of 157 breeds price below the state average, with the lowest-cost and low-cost tiers together accounting for the majority of breeds in the dataset. The mid-cost tier is the thinnest, with only 20 breeds landing within 5% of the state benchmark in either direction.

However, the low skew doesn't reflect what most Texas dog owners will actually pay. Two of the most widely owned breeds in the U.S., according to the American Kennel Club, are Labrador Retrievers and French Bulldogs, and neither clusters at the low end. Labrador Retrievers land in the mid-cost tier at $64 per month, essentially at the state average, while French Bulldogs sit in the highest-cost tier at $94 per month, 46% above it.

Average Pet Insurance Cost in Texas by Cat Breed

Cat insurance premiums in Texas average from $31 per month for a Bombay to $48 per month for an Australian Mist. The three tiers below show where each breed sits relative to the Texas cat average.

  • Low-cost breeds (5%+ below Texas cat average): Bombay, Domestic Shorthair
  • Mid-cost breeds (within ±5% of Texas cat average): Siamese, Russian Blue, British Longhair, Norwegian Forest Cat, Tonkinese, Chinchilla
  • High-cost breeds (5%+ above Texas cat average): Ragdoll, Birman, Devon Rex, Munchkin, Burmese, Snowshoe, Himalayan, Bengal, Scottish Fold, Cornish Rex, Persian, British Shorthair, Siberian, Balinese, Savannah, Maine Coon, Sphynx, Exotic Shorthair, Serengeti, Abyssinian, Australian Mist

21 of 29 cat breeds land in the high-cost tier, while only two sit below the state benchmark. The mid-cost tier is thin, with just six breeds landing within 5% of the state average in either direction.

It's worth noting, however, that the Domestic Shorthair, by far the most commonly owned cat in the U.S., prices at $31 per month, just below the state average. Meanwhile, Ragdolls, Maine Coons, Persians and British Shorthairs, all widely owned pedigree breeds, land in the high-cost tier, which means most Texas owners of pedigree cats will price above the state benchmark.

Average Cost of Pet Insurance in Texas by Age

At age one, the average Texas pet insurance premium is $32 per month. By age 15, the peak pricing point in our dataset, that figure reaches $153 per month, a 374% increase for identical coverage terms.

The climb isn't steady throughout a pet's life. Through the first three years, rates stay nearly flat, averaging $33 to $34 per month. Growth picks up at age four and accelerates through the mid-life years: the jump from age 4 to age 9 alone amounts to 81% as claim probability rises more consistently with each passing year. The sharpest run-up comes in the senior window: between ages 10 and 14, premiums move from $83 to $135 per month, a 62% increase over just four years, reflecting how chronic conditions drive both claim frequency and cost in older pets.

Age 15 marks the peak at $153 per month. From age 16 onward, rates drop slightly and hold flat at $145 per month through age 20, a pattern that points to a pricing ceiling rather than continued upward movement.

How to Lower Pet Insurance Costs in Texas Without Sacrificing Coverage

Coverage selection, breed and location within Texas drive most of the variation in pet insurance premiums, but those aren't the only levers available. How you structure your policy and where you shop can lower your monthly cost without giving up the coverage that matters when a claim is filed.

    vs icon
    Compare quotes from multiple insurers

Pet insurance providers in Texas use their own data, breed weightings and regional cost assumptions when calculating premiums, which means two policies with identical deductibles, limits and reimbursement rates can carry different monthly premiums for the same animal. Getting quotes from at least three insurers before committing gives you an accurate read on where your pet's specific profile prices in the market.

    giveMoney icon
    Adjust your deductible

The deductible is the out-of-pocket amount you cover before the insurer pays on a claim, and it resets annually rather than per visit. Raising it transfers more early claim cost to you, but the insurer responds by reducing the monthly premium. For cats or dogs with low hereditary risk or younger ages a $500 or $750 deductible can lower the monthly rate without materially changing what the policy delivers when it's needed most.

    money icon
Match your annual limit to realistic worst-case costs

The highest annual limits factor in catastrophic, multi-event claim years that represent the far end of the distribution for most pets. In Texas, where veterinary costs in Houston, Dallas and Austin can run higher than in smaller markets, that tail risk is priced into the premium even if it never materializes. For most dogs and cats, a mid-range annual limit covers the realistic scope of illness and injury claims. The question worth asking is what an unexpected but plausible health event would cost, not what the theoretical maximum could be.

    discount icon
Stay at 70% or 80% reimbursement

A 100% reimbursement rate means the insurer absorbs every covered dollar after the deductible. At 80%, you take on a share of each eligible claim, but the reduction in monthly cost tends to outweigh the coverage given up on any individual claim. The 70% tier extends that same logic further: the insurer still covers the majority of each claim, and the monthly rate continues to drop without eliminating meaningful financial protection.

    petMedicalCheckup icon
Weigh wellness add-ons against out-of-pocket costs

Optional wellness plans pay for routine care, such as annual exams, vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention, that most Texas pet owners are already budgeting for whether or not they carry pet insurance. Bundling that predictable spending into a monthly premium can feel convenient, but it adds to the base cost of the policy. Before adding a wellness plan, it's worth totaling what those routine expenses run each year and comparing that figure against what the add-on would cost over the same period.

Average Cost of Pet Insurance in Texas: Bottom Line

Pet insurance costs in Texas reflect how insurers assess each pet's individual claim risk; a calculation that pulls from breed, age, location and how the policy is structured. The $49 monthly Texas average is a useful starting point, but two pets in the same city can land at very different rates depending on those inputs.

Three questions help frame where a specific quote sits relative to the data in this report:

  1. Where does your pet's profile fall within the Texas dataset?
  2. Which factor is doing the most work in your quote?
  3. What adjustments are still available to you?

Use these questions to evaluate quotes and coverage options based on whether they reflect your pet's risk profile within Texas' market, not just whether they're above or below the state average.
