Standard homeowners insurance doesn't cover homes used for short-term rentals through Airbnb or similar platforms. Homeowners policies exclude business activity, and renting your home to paying guests for nightly or weekly stays qualifies as a business pursuit under most policy language. If your insurer discovers you've been hosting without disclosure, it can deny a claim or cancel your policy entirely. Review what homeowners insurance covers before listing your property.
Some insurers will extend temporary coverage if you notify them in advance of a one-time or infrequent rental. For regular hosting, you'll need a home-sharing endorsement, a landlord policy or a standalone short-term rental insurance policy to keep financial protection for both property damage and liability.
