What Does Motorcycle Liability Insurance Cover?

Motorcycle liability insurance covers you for all damages you are at fault for including property damage and bodily injuries up to specified limits per accident and per person. This also includes any legal fees associated with damages you've caused. However, no matter what, damages to your vehicle will not be covered under this motorcycle policy type.

What Are The Types of Liability Motorcycle Insurance?

There are two main types of liability motorcycle insurance:

  • Bodily injury: This covers you for injuries you cause in an accident up to a per person and per accident limit and are expressed as the first two numbers in a liability coverage split in this same order.
  • Property damage: This covers you for any property damage you cause whether it be from a collision with another vehicle or breaking a person's property separate from that with your bike. This coverage is done on a per accident basis and is the last number iexpressed in a liability coverage split.

Is Motorcycle Liability Insurance Required?

In 49 out of 50 states, some form of liability motorcycle insurance is required up to a specified limit and may or may not include uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. In most cases you'll be required to have a liability split of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident bodily injury coverage and $25,000 of property damage per accident coverage.
