Overview of Liberty Mutual Home Insurance
Founded in 1912 as a response to a new Massachusetts law requiring that employers carry workers’ comp insurance, Liberty Mutual started growing rapidly. By 1914, it was offering auto insurance, and in 1917 it began writing public liability policies. Since then, it also has become famous for its safety research and education campaigns, even earning the 2005 Green Cross for Safety Medallion from the National Safety Council. Though it didn’t begin offering property and casualty insurance until its purchase of Prudential’s personal lines in 2003, Liberty Mutual is now the third-largest provider of homeowners insurance in the U.S., with a market share of 6.75.

Liberty Mutual Home Insurance Coverage
Liberty Mutual offers a range of standard coverage and additional options appropriate for an insurance company of its size. The company has a history of valuing education, which is evident in its informative website covering a wide range of topics related to homeownership.
The website software will estimate a dwelling replacement cost, but allows you to adjust this number (some companies don’t let you change this estimate in the quote). The system also automatically quotes your policy at Liberty Mutual’s Home Protector Plus level, which means that the company’s standard policy offers very comprehensive coverage, instead of just the bare essentials.
The software estimates the replacement cost of your home, but you can change this number. If you reduce the coverage to a certain point, the system will warn you that the policy no longer qualifies for the Home Protector Plus coverage. In this case, you may be instructed call to purchase a policy.
The other structures coverage is set at 10 percent of the dwelling coverage limit.
The coverage for personal property is automatically set at 75 percent of the dwelling coverage.
There is no financial limit to this coverage. Your policy will cover the actual loss you incur.
You can choose from several options ranging from $100,000 to $1 million.
The no-fault guest medical coverage is available in coverage levels of $1,000 to $5,000 in thousand-dollar increments.
The wind/hail damage deductible is separate from the non-wind damage deductible, but both have a limited range of options. For wind, you can choose $1,000 or $2,500 or one or two percent of your dwelling coverage. For the regular damage deductible, the choices range from $500 to $2,500.
The Home Protector Plus policy includes extra coverage above and beyond the stated replacement cost limit to rebuild the house in the case of a total loss.
Just about all of the optional extras that you will find in the home insurance industry are available on your Liberty Mutual policy, with the exception of equipment breakdown coverage.
Liberty Mutual offers water-back up, but the only coverage option is $10,000.
Liberty Mutual is one of the few companies to allow you to include earthquake coverage on your quote without first consulting with an agent. The deductible for the coverage is expressed as a percentage of your dwelling coverage limit.
Liberty Mutual does write flood policies through the National Flood Insurance Program, but you will need to discuss it with an agent.
With this option, you have $15,000 of protection to help you recover from an instance of identity theft.
Many of the personal property items that have special limits of coverage are uncommon, but just about everyone has a home computer or a smart phone. This coverage can be added at the $5,000; $7,500 or $10,000 level.
Instead of individually scheduling your jewelry, you can get blanket protection for your pieces. This can be purchased for extra protection coverages of $2,500 to $10,000.
You can add individual and specific protection for other items that fall within the parameters of the special limits of coverage property, such as furs or firearms.
